Unique Save the Date Scrolls for a NYC Black-Tie Wedding
I love when clients want something unique and super special. It gives me so much joy to be able to conceptualize, craft and deliver a piece totally custom made for them that brings endless delight!
I had worked with Tiffany and Josh before—they’re the wonderful owners of two Pure Barre Brooklyn outposts where I had done two large lettering murals. Tiffany loved a little Christmas scroll that I mailed out to my friends and clients, and asked if I could create something similar but for their Save the Dates. Luckily, they weren’t having a massive wedding so the quantity was manageable for an entirely hand-crafted piece! Through the discovery process we decided to go with a motif of classic black and white, with a bouquet of mini flowers.
Each Save the Date scroll was made from a small wooden spool no taller than 1.25 inches, which I painted in black and adorned with a tiny bouquet of white paper flowers on top. While I didn’t make each individual flower myself, I did piece them together to form each bouquet. Phew!
The paper for the scroll was a soft but thick watercolor paper, on which I inscribed in copperplate calligraphy the wording to their Save the Date. It was then adhered to the spool, and the end reinforced with silver glitter tape and a satin ribbon threaded in to tie the rolled-up spool together.
Finally, each of these 2 inch tall creations were lovingly placed in a tiny padded box and delicately tied with black satin ribbon. Finally this little box was placed in an envelope and mailed off to each of their guests.
All in all I crafted a total of 70 pieces by hand!
I went on to design their invitations and create some calligraphy place cards for the wedding day itself, but the Save the Dates served as a true gift of anticipation to each of their beloved guests. I know the bride herself delivered some by hand just so she could be there to experience the wonderment and delight on the faces of the recipients!
